What is Elestial Quartz? What Makes a Stone an Elestial?
Much in the same way that Cactus Quartz and Sugar Quartz are names for a specific growth pattern of the gemstone, Elestial Quartz is a trade name used when discussing Quartz gems that exhibit a stepped or scaled pattern. Since it's a name for a growth pattern, there are as many varieties of Elestial crystal as there are varieties of Quartz! Since the stepped crystal growths can be flat, tabular, or more dimensional, the appearance of Elestial Quartz can vary quite a bit. Other names for Elestial Quartz include Alligator Quartz and Crocodile Quartz, owing to the similarity between some Elestial specimens and the scute patterns of some large reptiles. Other types of Quartz with complex growth patterns, such as Fenster Quartz and Skeletal Quartz, are sometimes referred to as Elestial Quartz by collectors. In addition, some collectors assert that a crystal cannot be called Elestial without the presence of a water pocket. This is incorrect, as Quartz gems with trapped water inside are specifically called Enhydro Quartz.
Types of Elestial Quartz
Since Elestial-ness is determined by the growth pattern of the crystal, any variety of Quartz that forms macrocrystalline structures can exhibit the Elestial pattern. This means that there is Elestial Clear Quartz, Elestial Smoky Quartz, Elestial Hematoid Quartz, Elestial Amphibole Quartz, Elestial Amethyst, and even Elestial Herkimer Diamond (itself a variety of ultra-clear Quartz from Herkimer, New York). It should also be noted: a similar step pattern can be found in some Calcite specimens, which are then referred to as Elestial Calcite.
