Crinoid fossils are incredible pieces of ancient history! Related to the starfish and the sea cucumber, ancient crinoids were much larger. Complete fossils are quite rare, and show that the crinoid strongly resembled a flower: likely how they came by their common name, “Sea Lilies.” In parts of England, the tubular fossil pieces of the sea lily’s “stem” are known as “fairy money.” Captured in sediment and hardened over the ages, crinoid fossils typically have a swirled pattern which comes from the pinnule, brachia, or calyx of the Crinoid. Abundant in connections with both the water and earth elements, crinoid fossils provide stability and acceptance, bringing us the endurance to withstand hardships and the flexibility to grow beyond them. Like all fossils, Crinoids hold a wealth of hidden wisdom. The quiet message of the crinoid fossil is that we must appreciate our own beauty and resilience and be an example to those who surround us.
Crinoids, are sea animals with many surviving relatives still inhabiting today’s oceans! The ancient ancestors of today’s crinoids first appeared in the earth’s oceans during the middle of the Cambrian period, many millions of years before the dinosaurs.
