Stone for Prosperity

Serpentine is a nice stone with a pleasing green colour. This, combined with the often seen 'scaly' attribute of the stone gave it its name. The stone was believed by some to remove venom, protect one from a venomous bite, and promote good health. High grade serpentine found a home in many places, such as cups, swords, necklaces, rings, and more.

The symbolic meaning of serpents were often that of fertility, life, eternity (ouroboros), and even medicine The Caduceus and Rod of Asclepius are perhaps the most well-known examples of the serpent being associated with medicine. It is likely from this history that serpentine is known as a stone for health. It was also believed to help remedy or cure rheumatism. Many, in part due to Christianity and Judaism, view the serpent negatively. Rather, to them, it is a symbol of deception, and at worst, the devil.

On a more positive note, serpents have also been associated with wealth and prosperity because of gods associated with them. The Caduceus, before its association with medicine, was actually with that of commerce, wealth, diplomacy, and trade. This general history of the serpent in symbolism likely influenced the traits now commonly associated with the the stone serpentine.

Us and the Stone

Serpentine is associated with the sign of Gemini and sometimes Capricorn. Aside from snakes, of course, the stone has a strong relationship with scarabs. This is due to the fact that Egyptians often used serpentine to create scarabs. It also has strong ties to the earth element. It is associated with the names Drake, Nagendra, and Ryū.
