Abalone Paua Shell Gemstone

Abalone Shell Meaning and Metaphysical Properties
A blessing from the ocean, Abalone Shells have been treasured throughout history as tools of spiritual healing and cleansing. Associated with the Water Element, Abalone Shell is known as a gem of restoration, encouraging emotional flexibility and equilibrium. Large Abalone Shells have long been part of indigenous traditions and rituals for spiritual healing, cleansing, and burning sage, which are all teachings that have survived into the modern day, spreading across the world. On the altar table, Abalone shells are also used for holding offerings to deities, spirits, or ancestors, and can also serve as a symbol of the Divine Feminine. Used during meditation, Abalone carvings and jewelry are thought to act as conduits for spiritual guidance, opening us to wisdom beyond our ken, strengthening our intuition, and promoting balance throughout the three bodies.

Abalone Shell is an organic gemstone, since it is a naturally rainbow-sheen material from the inner shell lining of the Abalone. This iridescent material, Nacre, is also what Pearls (and of course, Mother of Pearl) are made of. Variations in the calcium carbonate and conchiolin makeup of the Nacre, as well as the environment the Abalone lived in, cause the colors of the Abalone Shell to vary from piece to piece. Some are a pale silvery-white typical of Mother of Pearl, while others exhibit swirling blues and greens.  Since Nacre is a delicate material, it's important to handle your Abalone Shell gently and never to expose it to harsh cleansers or abrasive materials, since these can cause damage.
