What is Blue Quartz?

Blue Quartz (also commonly called Blue Aventurine) is a natural variety of Quartz crystal whose grey to grey-blue coloration occurs because of inclusions within the stone. These mineral inclusions may feature Crocidolite, Magnesio-Riebeckite, or even certain types of Tourmaline. The name Blue Quartz is also used when referring to massive Quartzite with inclusions of blue minerals. Although the presence of Dumortierite can also cause Quartz to take on a violet-blue hue, this is much rarer, and the intergrowth is referred to as Dumortierite Quartz, rather than Blue Quartz.

Are Blue Quartz and Blue Aventurine the Same?

Recently, it has become very common for the terms Blue Quartz and Blue Aventurine to be used interchangeably for Quartz gemstones with blue mineral inclusions, since they are mineralogically quite similar. Blue Aventurine is a term that has, in the past, mostly applied to specimens with higher clarity, featuring internal sparkles caused by inclusions of Mica, Hematite, Fuchsite, or even Copper. This is why we call these more opaque pieces "Blue Quartz" although the prevailing trend dictates that "Blue Aventurine" is also an acceptable moniker.
