What is Hematite?

Hematite, sometimes spelled Haematite, is a natural ferric oxide that occurs in several different earthy shades. The silvery-grey variety of Hematite that many collector are familiar with is Specular Hematite, aka Specular Iron Ore, but the mineral can also be found in a thin, scaled pattern that is referred to as Micaceous Hematite. Softer, earthen varieties of Hematite can be found in red-brown shades sometimes called Red Ochre, which is still used today to create paints and pigments. Hematite inclusions can be found within many other gemstones, often imparting a red, pink, brown, or yellow hue, although metallic grey Hematite veins are also found in Brecciated Jaspers and Tiger Iron. Specular Hematite is used when making gemstone towers, spheres, palm stones, and crystal jewelry, and it has become quite popular to wear Hematite rings or Hematite bracelets as a form of supernatural protection.

Meaning and Metaphysical Properties of Hematite

The Hematite crystal is used as a grounding stone, as well as a shielding gem, since it is associated with spiritual protection, balance, stress relief, and focus. As a Root Chakra stone, Hematite is known for promoting stability and equilibrium, helping us to filter away negativity to allow optimism to take its place. Since it is known as a stone for protection, Hematite is often made into gemstone jewelry, protective amulets, or Hematite rings, and worn as a talisman against malicious magic or negative energies. When we're asked, "What is Hematite used for?" spiritual protection is the primary answer, but Hematite crystal is also used as a stress relief gemstone, since it's excellent for grounding and helping us return to a peaceful, self-assured mindset. Work with Hematite during meditation when you are seeking a strong support stone for balancing emotions, reducing anxiety, strengthening self confidence, or protection against evil eyes.

How to Cleanse Hematite Stones

Hematite should not go in water, even for little dips! This is because, as a ferric oxide, Hematite will rust if exposed to too much moisture, especially salt water. We always suggest a Selenite tile or Full Moonlight for spiritually cleansing and charging Hematite, since these methods will not cause damage for your gemstone. Smoke Cleansing with Sage, Palo Santo, Incense, or dried herbs is another safe way to cleanse your Hematite stone.
