What is Zebra Jasper?
Like many honorary Jaspers, it shouldn't be surprising that Zebra Jasper is not technically a Jasper at all! Since Zebra Jasper is the most prevalent name for this gem, we use it here to avoid confusion for collectors. However, it should also be noted that Black Zebra Jasper, Brown Zebra Jasper, and Green Zebra Jasper are all mineralogically distinct from one another! Black and White Zebra Jasper is a form of Chalcedony exhibiting splotches or stripes due to mineral impurities such as iron oxides, manganese, or more rarely, soda-hornblende. Brown Zebra Jasper, on the other hand, is a sedimentary rock known for its warm earthy tones of brown, beige, and cream. Primarily found in Western Australia, Brown Zebra Jasper contains a blend of sericite, kaolinite, quartz, alunite, and other minerals. Green Zebra Jasper is the common name given to Chrysotile, a polymorph of Lizardite and Antigorite. Raw Chrysotile should be handled carefully, since it is a component of asbestos, and should never be inhaled.
