What is Bumblebee Jasper
Bumblebee Jasper is a natural gemstone that goes by many, many names! Sometimes referred to as Bumble Bee Jasper, Bumblebee Calcite, Fumarole Jasper, or Solar Eclipse Jasper, the gem can feature vibrant tones of yellow or orange mixed with muted grey, black, or white. While Bumblebee Jasper is the most common trade name of this colorful gemstone, it should be noted that it isn't a Jasper at all! Like many Honorary Jaspers, Bumblebee Jasper's name is a misnomer and only sticks because it is the most popularized term. Bumblebee Calcite is the most accurate name, since the stone is a form of fibrous, radially grown Calcite with inclusions of manganese oxides, sulfur, and other minerals. Some specimens may feature inclusions of realgar, pyrite, hematite, anhydrite, or orpiment as well.
Bumblebee Jasper Safety
Because some pieces of this natural gemstone can contain arsenic, we advise brief handling when it comes to Bumblebee Jasper, followed by washing your hands. As with all gemstones, you should never imbibe Bumblebee Jasper, since it is not for internal use. If you intend to carve or tumble your Bumblebee Jasper, take proper respiratory precautions and wear eye protection, since Bumblebee Jasper dust-- like all gemstone dust-- should not be breathed in or introduced to your eyes. Bumblebee Jasper is safe for display and is a wonderful addition to your crystal collection, but as with all gems, it should not be eaten, diffused in drinking water, breathed in, or applied to sensitive areas.
How to Cleanse Bumblebee Jasper
Since Bumblebee Jasper is actually a fibrous Calcite, it is quite soft, ranging from 3 - 3.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. This means that Bumblebee Jasper should not be submerged in water or other liquids long-term, since this can lead to softening and damage of the gem. Prolonged sun exposure can also damage this gem, so we suggest the use of a Selenite crystal or Full Moonlight exposure when spiritually charging or cleansing Bumblebee Jasper. Another safe way the cleanse Bumblebee Jasper is through Smoke Cleansing with Palo Santo, dried herbs, Incense, or Sage.
