Scolecite is a gemstone of the Zeolite group. Typically occurring alongside other Zeolites in basalt as a cavity mineral, Scolecite can also be found in gneisses, amphiboles, and laccoliths. Scolecite forms in several shades, from ivory-white to peachy-pink, and even a pale green tone, and is best known for its fibrous spoke-like growth pattern that lends itself to excellent cleavage slices. This growth pattern can result in a pearlescent sheen on particularly high quality pieces, akin to chatoyancy. Scolecite can also form in colorless or white crystals! Although Scolecite is a 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale, it is a brittle gem and should be handled with care to avoid breakage along its grain of growth.
