What is Ocean Jasper?
Ocean Jasper is a trade name applied to certain varieties of Orbicular Jasper, Orbicular Rhyolite, and Spherulitic Chalcedony. Highly silicified varieties of Rhyolite or pyroclastic rock with radial growths of Quartz or Feldspar can also exhibit this orbicular pattern when properly cut and polished. Although the name was once applied only to specimens from a specific source in Madagascar, the name Ocean Jasper has since been used to refer to similarly patterned stones from Indonesia, as well as sea-colored Jasper stones the world over that don't exhibit the orbicular pattern at all. This has led to a wide range of other trade names for the stone depending on color, patterning, and sourcing. Some of the other names for Ocean Jasper include Sea Jasper, Kinradite, River Jasper, Orbicular Jasper, Orbicular Rhyolite, and Water Jasper. Although it is best known for its earthy shades of green, brown, and beige, Ocean Jasper has also been found in natural shades of red, orange, yellow, white, pale blue, and pink. Of these, Pink Ocean Jasper and Blue Ocean Jasper are the most popular, often being cut into natural stone cabochons to create Ocean Jasper jewelry.
