What is Pyrite?
Pyrite is a natural metallic gemstone that has been mistaken for Gold in the past, since it can be found in tones ranging from brassy to silvery. This is why Pyrite is sometimes referred to as Fool's Gold. It can be found in a wide range of geological formations, and is a polymorph of Marcasite, which means that the two stones feature the same chemical makeup but different crystal structures. Pyrite can be found in glittery, geometrical clusters or as grained masses, and may even cause fossil structures such as Ammonites to become pyritized! It should be noted that Pyrite may leave behind dark smudges on hands or other materials, so it should be handled carefully. This is because Pyrite can take on a tarnish layer, especially in humid environments. While Pyrite is sometimes mistaken for Hematite due to the metallic appearance of both gems, they are mineralogically distinct and are not the same stone.
What is Pyrite Used for?
The metaphysical properties and spiritual meaning of Pyrite makes this stone a popular one for using in crystal grids or rituals that involve protection, cleansing, prosperity, or luck. Pyrite is also used in the spiritual healing of voids, as well as cleansing the aura and Chakras. Keeping Pyrite crystals in the home in a small bowl of coins is said to draw abundance into the dwelling, while lining window sills with Pyrite pebbles is known as a way of warding against evil spirits. Wearing Pyrite jewelry is another traditionally protective measure, as it is considered a gemstone for shielding against psychic attacks, malicious magic, and evil eyes.
How to Cleanse Pyrite Crystals
Although Pyrite rates a 6 - 6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, it should never be directly exposed to water and should be stored in as dry an environment as possible. This is because Pyrite can begin to tarnish and degrade in humidity, and over time, your crystal could become irreparably damaged by water exposure. Do not submerge your Pyrite if you love your gem! A Selenite tile or Selenite bowl can safely be used for cleansing and charging your Pyrite crystal, as can exposure to Full Moonlight. Smoke Cleansing with Sage, Palo Santo, Incense, or dried herbs is another safe way to spiritually cleanse Pyrite. We always suggest these methods, as they will not cause damage to your crystals.
