What is Red Jasper?
Red Jasper is a natural variety of Jasper stone, and is widely considered the most easily identifiable version of the gem. Red Jasper presents as an opaque, fine-grained microcrystalline Chert and can range from a terracotta shade to deeper tones of red-brown or maroon due to high amounts of Iron in the stone. The most prized pieces are a bright, vibrant red. Often found as Brecciated Jasper, where its growth pattern is broken by pockets or veins of Hematite, Martite, Quartz, or Chalcedony, crystal collectors have taken to giving certain patterns of Red Jasper different nicknames to allow for differentiation. For example, Red Jasper with Hematite or Martite is sometimes called Tiger Iron even when it doesn't include Tiger Eye, but is more often simply called Jasper Hematite. Red Jasper with white or clear brecciation from Quartz, Chalcedony, and different types of Clay can be found referred to as Flower Jasper. Red Jasper with splotches or speckles of Black Jasper, sometimes with Yellow Jasper mixed in, is known as Poppy Jasper.
