What is Rhodochrosite Crystal?
Rhodochrosite (sometimes spelled Rhodocrosite) is a natural gemstone in the Calcite Group of minerals. Ranging from red to pink to warm yellow-brown, Rhodochrosite is a gem whose appearance varies greatly based on its purity. The most popular shades-- raspberry reds and tender pinks-- derive their color from the presence of Manganese, and this coloration can cause Rhodochrosite to be confused with Rhodonite by some collectors. This raises another question: How to tell the difference between Rhodochrosite and Rhodonite. Firstly, Rhodochrosite is a carbonate mineral with a triagonal crystal system, while Rhodonite is inosilicate with a triclinic crystal system. However, if your specimens are tumbled or carved, the easiest way to tell a difference is that Rhodochrosite is more prone to featuring bands and layers of lighter shades, while Rhodonite is typically splotched in appearance, often with black. Rhodochrosite crystals of high quality are extremely prized, with transparent specimens being quite rare. It is more often found in aggregate growths with irregular banding, and this striking pattern makes Rhodochrosite tumbled stones, towers, and palm stones especially beautiful.

How to Cleanse Rhodochrosite
Rhodochrosite, being a member of the Calcite group, is quite soft on the Mohs hardness scale, ranging from 3.5 to 4. This means that Rhodochrosite should not be put in water for cleansing, at least not long-term. A quick dip or a pass with a wet cloth won't immediately damage your Rhodochrosite, but long-term submersion can further soften your stone or result in discoloration. We always suggest a Selenite tile or bowl, or Full Moonlight, when it comes to cleansing and charging crystals, because these methods are safe for all gems and won't result in damage. Smoke Cleansing with Sage, Incense, or dried herbs is another safe method for spiritually cleansing Rhodochrosite. We advise against long-term Sunlight Cleansing and charging for this stone, as intensive UV exposure can change the color of your Rhodochrosite over a long period of time.
