What is Septarian Stone?
Septarian stone, sometimes called Dragon Septarian, Dragon Egg, or Dragon Stone, is a natural concretion formed when a spheroid of mudstone or clay ironstone forms a series of radiating cracks within the nodule. These cracks naturally become filled by growths of calcium carbonate such as Calcite or Aragonite over time, creating the striking patterns Septarian stone is known for. Since Septarian nodules can form with widely varying patterns within, each one is unique from the next. While many specimens feature a combination of beige to brown mudstone with yellow Calcite as intergrowth, some Septarian geodes have been found with darker brown to black ironstone or black Calcite. These high contrast Septarian nodules are typically referred to as Black Septarian.
Septarian Meaning and Metaphysical Properties
Septarian is traditionally thought of as a support stone for scholars and those in leadership roles, as it is believed to store energy for later use and facilitate the acceptance of wisdom. Resonating with the Heart Chakra, Throat Chakra, and Third Eye Chakra, Septarian stone helps us form a bridge between our feelings and our logic, encouraging us to deepen our emotional intelligence and build stronger relationships with others through open communication, mutual respect, and trust. It is a phenomenal gemstone for anyone who oversees the teamwork of large groups or needs to engage in public speaking on a regular basis, since Septarian is considered a gem of partnership, insight, and understanding. Because of Septarian's magical properties, it is often made into crystal jewelry, to be worn daily so that it can collect energy to disperse at a later time when needed.
How to Cleanse Septarian
Since Septarian stones are formed through the intergrowth of mudstone (or ironstone) and calcium carbonate gems, they have a highly variable hardness level. Septarian is typically between 3.5 - 4 on the Mohs hardness scale, which makes this gemstone quite soft. For this reason, we advise against submerging your Septarian stone, although gently cleaning it with a damp cloth and allowing it to dry immediately after should not cause damage. We always suggest the use of a Selenite crystal or exposure to Full Moonlight as a method for cleansing and charging gemstone, since these practices won't cause any damage to your gem. Smoke Cleansing with Palo Santo, Incense, Sage, or dried herbs is another safe way to spiritually cleanse Septarian.
