Blue Sodalite Crystal

Blue Sodalite Crystal

What is Sodalite?

Sodalite is the name used when referring to any gem in the Sodalite group, but crystal collectors usually use this name specifically for a deeply blue colored feldspathoid, even though Sodalite can actually be found in many different shades. For example, Hackmanite is actually a variety of Sodalite that exhibits pinkish-purple coloration as well as reversible photochromism. Blue Sodalite is highly sought after for its deep, blue-grey tones. Since it is sometimes mixed with streaks of white, black, or grey, Sodalite may sometimes be mistaken for Lapis Lazuli. It's important to remember that these two stones are mineralogically different, so Sodalite and Lapis Lazuli are not the same gems.

Sodalite Meaning and Metaphysical Properties

The spiritual properties of Sodalite make it an ideal crystal for opening avenues of communication, honesty, and reconciliation. Since it is a strong Throat Chakra stone, blue Sodalite promotes self expression and personal authenticity, encouraging us to speak from the heart. This makes Sodalite a highly useful support stone when it comes to communication in relationships, between family members, or with friends. Sodalite is particularly used for solving problems, bridging estrangements, and conveying oneself with clarity to avoid misunderstandings. For this reason, Sodalite jewelry is a fantastic choice for anyone who must engage in mediation, counseling, or public speaking. It is also a phenomenal gem for maintaining open lines of communication within relationships, and is considered a spiritual tool for helping us to speak our feelings and express love.

How to Cleanse Sodalite Crystal

Sodalite is approximately a 5.5 - 6 on the Mohs hardness scale, but we do not advise long-term submersion for this gemstone. While a short dunk in water will not cause immediate damage, soaking Sodalite for long periods may cause the stone to soften, making it more prone to scratching or breakage if dropped. Sodalite is quite sensitive to acidity as well, so make sure not to use any harsh cleansers on your Sodalite crystal. For spiritual cleansing and charging of crystals, we always suggest using a Selenite bowl or exposure to Full Moonlight, since these methods won't cause any damage to your gem. Another safe way to cleanse your Sodalite is Smoke Cleansing with Incense, Sage, Palo Santo, or dried herbs.
