What is Bowenite Stone?
Bowenite is a natural variety of Antigorite, ranging in color from pale yellow-green to deep grey-green. It has a slightly waxy texture once polished, and is prized for its use in jewelry and ornamentation as a substitute for Jade. Since Antigorite is a compact variety of Serpentine, this puts Bowenite in the Serpentine subgroup. Bowenite is also sometimes called Greenstone or Tangiwai, depending on where it was sourced. Although some collectors refer to pale Antigorite specimens as New Jade, and thus use New Jade as another name for Bowenite, it should be remembered that New Jade is a cryptocrystalline mixture of Antigorite, Chrysotile, and Lizardite. As such, it is not the same as Bowenite, which is a variety of Antigorite primarily.
Bowenite Meaning and Metaphysical Properties
Bowenite resonates with the Heart Chakra and Crown Chakra, and is associated with letting go of negativity, achieving success, welcoming prosperity, and building personal wisdom. It is believed that Bowenite helps us to cultivate greater awareness of the symbols, signs, and spiritual messages that surround us. Bowenite is often kept by the bedside to inspire prophetic dreams and promote lucidity in the dreamstate. This elevated perspective is likely why Bowenite is used when meditating for positivity, since it is known for helping us to see the good in the world and draw it toward us in the form of blessings, wealth, and knowledge.
How to Cleanse Bowenite
Depending on its source and rate of inclusion, Bowenite ranges from 2.5 - 4 on the Mohs hardness scale, meaning that it is quite soft and should not be rubbed against abrasive materials, cleaned with harsh chemicals, or soaked in water long-term. We always advise a Selenite tile or Full Moonlight exposure for spiritually cleansing crystals, since these methods will not cause any harm. Another safe way to cleanse your Bowenite stone is Smoke Cleansing with Sage, Palo Santo, dried herbs, or Incense.
