Chrysocolla Gemstone

What is Chrysocolla? Where is Chrysocolla Found?

Chrysocolla is a natural secondary copper mineral, often found among other secondary copper minerals such as Malachite or Azurite. Chrysocolla can be found in botryoidal, bubbled growths, as vein fillings, or masses. Pure Chrysocolla can be quite delicate, but harder varieties of Chrysocolla can be found as intergrowth with Quartz or Chalcedony, providing a more resilient version of this beautiful gem.  Chrysocolla has been found in locales around the world, whether in Europe, Australia, North America, South America, Africa, or some areas of Asia, since it can be found wherever copper minerals and water containing dissolved silica interact.

Chrysocolla Properties and Spiritual Meaning

Chrysocolla is a Water element gemstone known for its beautiful hues of green, teal, and blue, often mixed with flecks of brown. As a crystal of the Heart Chakra and Throat Chakra, Chrysocolla's meaning is tied to self awareness, self expression, and self reliance. Chrysocolla is very much a gem for facilitating leadership qualities and earning the respect of those around us through virtuous, decisive action and calm communication. Known for helping us balance confidence and compassion, Chrysocolla motivates us to solve problems and make decisions that will best benefit ourselves and those we hold dear. In meditation, Chrysocolla is used for promoting a mature, centered outlook and for assisting in reconciliation between parties that have been at odds with one another. This makes Chrysocolla an excellent gem to keep in the home or workplace if you are trying to ease strife or discord.

How to Cleanse Chrysocolla

Chrysocolla is a gem that forms due to the interaction of copper minerals and dissolved silica in water, but Chrysocolla should not be soaked in water for cleansing or for any other purpose. This is partly because Chrysocolla is quite soft and porous (a 2.5 to 3.5 on the Mohs hardness scale) and can be damaged over time by soaking, resulting in a stone that's easier to break or crumble. In addition to this, copper oxides within the Chrysocolla may leech out when soaking in liquids. As with any crystal or gemstone, never inhale the dust of Chrysocolla, never eat the stone, and never drink water diffused with Chrysocolla!

For spiritually cleansing and charging Chrysocolla, we always suggest a Selenite bowl or exposure to Full Moonlight, since these methods are safe for you and for your Chrysocolla crystal. We do not advise Sun Exposure as a cleansing or charging method for Chrysocolla, since long-term UV exposure can cause the gem to discolor or become brittle. If you prefer a Fire-element aligned cleansing method, Smoke Cleansing with incense, dried herbs, Sage, or Palo Santo is a good way to cleanse your Chrysocolla.
