What is Dendritic Agate?
Dendritic Agate is a natural gemstone variety of Chalcedony with dark inclusions of iron or manganese within. Since these dark inclusions can sometimes form branching pattern, the term Dendritic is used since the growths are tree-like. These Dendritic Agate pieces with foliage patterns are sometimes referred to as Tree Agate. However, they should not be confused with the white-and-green Moss Agate variety that is also referred to as Tree Agate, since the two stones are distinctly different. Different patterns of Dendritic Agate are sometimes referred to with varying trade names, allowing for further specificity.
Popular types of Dendritic Agate include: Dendritic Montana Agate, known for its milky appearance, sometimes mixed with pale yellow, brown, or orange, and splotches of dendritic inclusion. Medicine Bow Agate, aka Medicine Bow Plume Agate, which offers a stark contrast between semi-opaque white Chalcedony and black plume-like inclusions mixed with dendrites. Purple Dendritic Agate, showing off semi-opaque shades of pale purple, mauve, or maroon mixed with dendritic inclusions. While Moss Agate and Tree Agate are sometimes considered Dendritic Agates, it's important to note that they typically derive their green patterning mostly from inclusions of Chlorite or Hornblende and usually do not feature black dendritic inclusions of iron or manganese. When Moss Agate or Tree Agate does include black dendrites, they should be referred to as Dendritic Moss Agate or Dendritic Tree Agate respectively to differentiate them from regular specimens.
