What is Green Calcite?
Green Calcite is a natural gemstone variety of calcium carbonate that derives its color from microscopic inclusions of Chlorite, Copper, or Iron, depending on the source location of the stone. Calcite is a polymorph of Aragonite, meaning that the two feature the same chemical makeup, but different crystal structures. Calcite stones are found all over the world in a wide variety of colors, with Green Calcite among them. Ranging from pale yellow-green to greenish teal, Green Calcite may be semi-translucent to opaque and may feature inclusions or bands of other minerals. Subtle differences in shade or patterning results in the use of trade names in order to allow collectors to accurately find the exact tone they're looking for. For example, pastel yellow-green to pale blue-green pieces of Green Calcite are often called Pistachio Calcite or Seafoam Calcite. Banded Green Calcites that are yellow-green in color and intergrown with Brown Aragonite, Orange Aragonite, or Limestone are often sold under the trade name Green Onyx, Marble Onyx, or Pakistan Onyx.
Green Calcite Meaning and Metaphysical Properties
Green Calcite is a Heart Chakra stone and is known as the stone of plenty. This is because Green Calcite is deeply associated with abundance, whether it be in the form of good luck, love, or happiness. For this reason, Green Calcite is used when manifesting positive changes on the life path and is especially useful when it comes to stabilizing turbulent, negative situations or seeking opportunities where they did not exist before. Deeper true-green varieties of Green Calcite are known to instill uplifting energies, promoting joy and success in our endeavors, while softer blue-green varieties such as Pistachio Calcite are believed to impart a more soothing vibration that lends itself to harmonious teamwork and emotional healing.
How to Cleanse Green Calcite
We often get asked: Can Calcite get wet? As always with soft stones, we must advise against it. Green Calcite is a 2.5 - 3 on the Mohs hardness scale, meaning that the stone is quite soft. Long-term submersion can result in damage to your crystal, so we must caution against resting your Green Calcite in liquids. Of course, a quick splash or wiping with a wet cloth won't cause your Green Calcite to disintegrate, but when in doubt, it's best to avoid water exposure altogether. Green Calcite can be safely charged and cleansed using a Selenite tile or Selenite bowl, or by providing it with Full Moonlight exposure. Another entirely safe way of cleansing Green Calcite is Smoke Cleansing using Sage, Palo Santo, Incense, or dried herbs. We always suggest these methods since they won't damage your crystal.
