What is Howlite?
Howlite is a natural borate mineral and can usually be found in nodule form, embedded within Anhydrite or Gypsum. These Howlite nodules have an interesting shape similar to that of cauliflower, and are usually seen with opaque white or ivory coloration and sporting grey veining. Although Howlite can form in crystals, these are much rarer, and are usually colorless to brownish-grey-- a far cry from the White Howlite most collectors are accustomed to.
Howlite Meaning and Metaphysical Properties
White Howlite is used as a gemstone for stress relief, inner peace, and finding joy in the world around us by encouraging us to let go of the little things. It is believed that Howlite removes and filters negative thoughts for those who work with it, providing mental focus and a more hopeful perspective. Howlite is also considered to be a good warding stone for shielding against ambient negative energy, preventing outside influences from inspiring selfishness. Carry Howlite with you as a touchstone during times when you must interact with persistently negative people, or find yourself in a bad mood, and you will quickly discover why this gemstone is associated with calming tempers, staying centered, and instilling compassion. It's not surprising that Howlite is a Crown Chakra crystal, since the spiritual properties of Howlite make it a gem for acting in accordance with the Higher Self.
How to Cleanse Howlite
Sources listing the Mohs hardness of Howlite as 6 - 6.5 are referring specifically to its rarer crystal formations, since massive Howlite (the white nodule form) is much softer at 3 - 3.5. This means that you should not expose your Howlite to liquids long-term, since this can result in further softening and damage of the stone. For spiritually cleansing or charging your Howlite, we always suggest a Selenite bowl or exposure to Full Moonlight. Smoke Cleansing with Sage, dried herbs, Incense, or Palo Santo wood is another safe way to cleanse Howlite stones.
