What is Larvikite?
Larvikite is a natural gemstone, mostly consisting of rhomb-shaped ternary Feldspars mixed with Titanian Augite and Barkevikite, Larvikite can also feature Lepidomelane (a type of Mica), Nepheline, or Quartz. It's considered a variety of Augite Syenite or Monzonite, but because of its schiller effect many collectors refer to Larvikite as a "cousin" of Labradorite. In fact, one of Larvikite's many monikers is Black Labradorite, so we often get asked the question: Is Labradorite the same as Larvikite? While the two gems can appear similar because they can both exhibit flash, they are mineralogically different. Indeed, even the shade of schiller effect is different between the two stones, since Labradorite flashes in a variety of colors, while Larvikite flashes a soothing silvery-blue shade. It's not a surprise that there would be confusion, though! Larvikite has tons of alternate names, such as Black Pearl Moonstone, Larvakite, Blue Pearl Granite, Pearlspar, Blue Birds Eye.. and the list goes on!

How to Cleanse Larvikite
The Mohs hardness of Larvikite is approximately 6, and so the stone is safe for light dips in water or wiping with a wet cloth, although, as always, we caution against long-term submersion. We tend to advise the use of a Selenite bowl or tile, or Full Moonlight, for charging and cleansing stones since these methods won't cause any harm to your gems. Smoke Cleansing with Sage, Incense, or dried herbs is another safe way to spiritually cleanse your Larvikite stone.
