What is Pietersite Stone?

Considered one of the world's most beautiful gems Pietersite, also known as Touchonite or Tempest Stone, is a natural occurring variety of Chalcedony with embedded Amphibole minerals within that show varying degrees of alteration. Because of the presence of Limonite, Riebeckite, Crocidolite, and other Amphiboles, Pietersite can take on shades ranging from grey-brown to reddish, from yellowy to a deep blue-black, and may exhibit a similar chatoyancy to Tigers Eye. Indeed, one of the trade names for Pietersite used by some sources is Arizona Tiger Eye, although there are key differences between the two stones. 

Are Pietersite and Tigers Eye the Same?

Although the two gemstones can exhibit similar coloration and chatoyancy due to the presence of Amphibole minerals, there are subtle differences between Tigers Eye and Pietersite. Pietersite is widely considered a form of brecciated Chalcedony, with the grain of its Amphiboles often disjointed, resulting in some specimens having multiple colors thrown together like a kaleidoscope, some displaying chatoyancy while others do not. In Tigers Eye, the Amphibole strands tend to be aligned quite regularly, resulting in the almost velvety, steady shine that Tigers Eye is loved for.
