What is Smoky Quartz Crystal?
Smoky Quartz (sometimes spelled Smokey Quartz) is a natural variety of Quartz crystal whose color ranges from pale brown to nearly black. This color occurs due to traces of aluminum inside the crystal's growth pattern at the level of its lattice. When gamma irradiation occurs due to naturally occurring radioactive minerals in the Earth, this exposure causes changes to the aluminum and silicon in the Smoky Quartz, resulting in its earthy color. This is also why Smoky Quartz is sometimes referred to as "Irradiated Quartz" although it's very important to note that there is no radiation hazard associated with the stone. Smoky Quartz is sometimes found with natural Citrine crystal intergrowth, resulting in a beautifully golden-brown tone coveted by collectors.
The Meaning and Properties of Smoky Quartz
Smoky Quartz has been used throughout history as a stone of spiritual power and protection, often kept in the home to ward against negative energy and malevolent entities. Smoky Quartz crystal spheres and mirrors are still used to this day for divination work, such as scrying, since the gemstone is associated with uncovering hidden wisdom and attaining a centered mindset. When held during meditation, Smoky Quartz is a supreme Root Chakra crystal for grounding, which is why many carry the stone to fidget with for stress relief. Smoky Quartz crystal jewelry is worn as a method of metaphysical protection, particularly against psychic attacks and the evil eye.
How to Cleanse Smoky Quartz
A Selenite tile or bowl is a useful method for cleansing and charging crystals, as is Full Moonlight. Since Smoky Quartz has a Mohs hardness of approximately 7, it is safe to spiritually cleanse this gem in water. Smoke Cleansing with Sage, Incense, or dried herbs seems extremely fitting, given the name of the gem, and is safe for Smoky Quartz, as is the Dry Salt Bath method of cleansing. We caution against Sunlight as a method of charging or cleansing Smoky Quartz, since prolonged and consistent sun exposure can cause this crystal to lighten in color over time.
