"Vesuvianite" refers to a group of minerals that can be found in skarns, metamorphic, hydrothermal, and volcanic contact rocks. While Vesuvianite can be found in semi-transparent crystals, the majority of Vesuvianite found on the market is its massive form which, when tumbled or polished, is opaque and has a slightly waxy texture. This massive form of Vesuvianite is sometimes used in jewelry making as substitute for Jade. Although it's probably best known for its olive green to grey-green shades, Vesuvianite can also be found in tones of dull yellow, brown, white, reddish-purple, and even blue. Vesuvianite is also known as Idocrase, Duparcite, Genevite, or Jevreinovite. "Vasonite" is another popular name applied to Vesuvianite, but this appears to be a translation error or a popular moniker rather than a scientific name.
