What is Yellow Calcite?

Yellow Calcite is a natural gemstone variety of calcium carbonate and a polymorph of Aragonite, meaning that the two feature the same chemical makeup, but different crystal structures. Yellow Calcite can vary in shade and clarity, from a pale pastel yellow to nearly orange or amber depending on its rate of iron inclusion and the presence of other impurities. These pale sunshine-toned Calcites are typically called Yellow Calcite, while deeper varieties are called Orange Calcite or Honey Calcite. Yellow Calcite may be semi-translucent to opaque and may feature inclusions or bands of other minerals, resulting in various trade names to help with differentiation. When found growing together with White Calcite or Clear Calcite, Yellow Calcite is sometimes referred to as Lemon Calcite since it resembles the flesh and pith of the fruit. It can also be found in banded growths alongside Brown Calcite or Black Calcite, with these intergrowths referred to commonly as Zebra Calcite. Particularly vibrant Yellow Calcites, especially ones with a yellow-green tinge are sometimes called Pineapple Calcite.

How to Cleanse Yellow Calcite

We often get asked: Can Calcite get wet? As always with soft stones, we must advise against it. Yellow Calcite is a 2.5 - 3 on the Mohs hardness scale, meaning that the stone is quite soft. Long-term submersion can result in damage to your crystal, so we must caution against resting your Yellow calcite in liquids or wearing Yellow Calcite jewelry in the shower. Of course, a quick splash or wiping with a wet cloth won't cause your Yellow Calcite to disintegrate immediately, but when in doubt, it's best to avoid water exposure altogether. Yellow Calcite can be safely charged and cleansed using a Selenite tile or Selenite bowl, or by providing it with Full Moonlight exposure. Another safe way to spiritually cleanse Yellow Calcite is Smoke Cleansing using Sage, Palo Santo, Incense, or dried herbs.
