The first thing to know is that Dragon's Blood Jasper is not actually a Jasper. Like many gems, this trade name has been applied and sticks like glue, although Dragon Stone, aka Dragon Blood Jasper or Dragon Jasper, is not a Jasper at all. There are several reasons this moniker sticks: Firstly, it's evocative of the stone's appearance. The green and red tones of the gem are definitely reminiscent of a wounded dragon. Secondly, there are other rocks that are sometimes referred to as Dragon Stone, such as Septarian and Ohko rock, which can lead to some confusion. Thirdly, Dragon Blood Jasper is a term used to refer to a specific coloration of stone whose actual mineral makeup varies. Depending on the specimen, Dragon Stone's green shades often come from Epidote, but can also be caused by the presence of Bastite, while the red shades are usually attributed to Piemontite, but can also occur because of deeply red-colored Manganese bearing Epidote, or even Tweddillite. All this being the case, Dragon Blood Stone might be a better term, although that would lead to inevitable confusion with Bloodstone, which is a separate gemstone altogether.
