Kambaba Jasper, also known as Kabamba Jasper, Crocodile Jasper, Alligator Jasper, or Green Stromatolite, is known for its swirling patterns of black and grey-green, sometimes mixed with shades of brown. Like many popular gems, Kambaba Jasper is not a Jasper at all, but retains the moniker because the name has become so widely spread. Although it was long believed to be a form of Stromatolite (fossilized microbial deposit), this is also not the case! Rather, Kambaba "Jasper" is actually a form of volcanic Rhyolite whose colors derive from a blend of Quartz, Aegirine (and other Pyroxene minerals), Albite, and K Feldspar, as well as Amphibole minerals such as Pargasite and Riebeckite. This means that Kambaba Rhyolite is a much more fitting name, but alas! It has simply never caught on.
