Lapis Lazuli is a natural gemstone variety of metamorphic rock that typically occurs within crystalline limestones. Lapis Lazuli's deep blue shades are reliant on the presence of Hauyne (most commonly), Vladimirivanovite, Afghanite, or Lazurite (rarest occurrence). Streaks of grey or white Calcite and speckled inclusions of Pyrite are extremely common, and are considered markers for identification when comparing Lapis Lazuli to other blue gemstones such as Sodalite.  When color-enhanced or dyed, the Pyrite inclusions within Lapis Lazuli will sometimes turn black.
