Properties and Meaning of White Sage

White Sage (also known as Bee Sage) is a sacred herb originally used in Native American spiritual traditions which has since been taught to and adopted by people across the world for use in cleansing spaces, items, and people of negative energy. Associated with the removal of malicious entities, dissolving spiritual wounds, and breaking chaotic cycles, White Sage smudging is synonymous with metaphysical protection and purification. For this reason, White Sage is often used in cleansing rituals for the home and during the consecration of spiritual tools. Many also incorporate burning White Sage into their meditative practices, as the herb is known for assisting in the processing and release of emotional wounds, stresses, and negative thoughts.

How to Burn Sage

When burning your loose White Sage, always be careful to keep it away from flammable materials, children, or pets. For safety, it is best to keep your White Sage leaves and stems in a smudge pot, smudge bowl, Abalone shell, or other fire-proof container while it is lit.

Before lighting your Sage, take a moment to focus your mind on the work you are about to do. This may involve visualizing a cleansing light of renewal, reciting a mantra, affirmation, or prayer, or focusing on the tones of a bell, singing bowl, or your own voice. Each spiritual practitioner's relationship with White Sage is different and complex. This action should be a personal experience that expresses your intent, be it purification or protection, as well as appreciation for the sacred. As you set your intention, move calmly throughout your home, breathing slowly, opening windows in each room to allow the Sage smoke to drive out stagnant energies.

When you are centered and prepared, allow the leaves of your loose White Sage to light to a low flame, allowing it to smolder out on its own, and allowing wafting smoke to permeate throughout the space.  If your smudge pot is safe to carry, you can cradle it in your hands with the Sage inside, ushering the smoke throughout the rooms of the home while keeping your spiritual intent in mind.

For Smoke Cleansing crystals or spiritual tools, the items may be passed slowly through the White Sage smoke while held in your hand above the smudge pot (at a safe distance so as not to incur burns). Your smudge bowl can also be circled above and around the items you intend to cleanse, or the smoke can be gently wafted over the items using a feather, leaf, or your hands. In all cases, it is important to keep your intention in mind, focusing on the removal of any lingering negativity.

Respect and gratitude should be at the forefront of any handling of White Sage, but your cleansing rituals do not necessarily have to be somber. Dance around the Sage smoke that rises from your smudge pot, raise your voice in a trill of exultation as you reclaim your spiritual space. Hope and joy will assist you in your endeavors.

How to Store Sage

White Sage is natural, organic plant matter which has been dried, and it will change color over time, as our White Sage leaves and stems have not been treated with any preservative chemicals. Storing your smudging Sage in a dry, cool environment will prolong its shelf life. If your loose White Sage has become difficult to light, it may have taken on excess humidity from the surrounding air, but you can dry your Sage out again with sun exposure. Please note: Do not put your Sage in the microwave!

Loose White Sage can be burned safely in a smudge pot or other fire proof container. Take care that no portion of your White Sage extends outside the container and that you keep it well away from drafts, flammable materials, children, and pets. Keep your loose Sage in the smudge pot until it is completely done burning. Do not attempt to carry burning stems or leaves of Sage, as this poses a fire hazard and could result in injury!
