What is a Garnet?
The Garnet group contains a diverse spectrum of shades, ranging from vibrant reds to deep burgundy, vivacious orange to luscious green, yellow-brown to pink, and even colorless. These varying colors of Garnet are organized under their own titles: Almandine Garnet, the quintessential burgundy Garnet that we all know and love, and the most widely spread. Pyrope Garnet, which can sometimes exhibit the Alexandrite effect, changing shades depending on the light. Spessartine Garnet, sometimes called Orange Garnet because of its popular, fiery tones. Andradite Garnet, found in skarns, Chlorite schists, and even in serpentines. Grossular Garnet, a green variety named for how closely the shade resembles gooseberries, even though the stone can also be found in hues of yellow, pink, or brown. And of course, Uvarovite, a chromium Garnet end member whose intense emerald tones are coveted by collectors.
When commonly referring to Garnets without differentiation between types, most people are referring to Almandine specimens, as these are likely the stones that first earned the gem its name. The name "Garnet" derives from "granatum" (pomegranate), which is well in keeping with the color of many types of Garnet, but it is Almandine Garnets that are the most plentiful in the world (akin to pomegranate seeds). This is also the variety of Garnet that is used as a birthstone for the month of January. These beautiful red Garnets have long been used in the creation of gemstone jewelry, amulets, and talismans since the gem's color is rich and eye-catching.
