What is Moldavite?
What many refer to as Moldavite crystal is actually a type of Tektite: a natural glass formed when intense heat and pressure fling melted terrestrial debris away from the site of impact. Since Tektites can include any of the surface-level earth present at the impact site, as well as material from the meteorite that fell, their makeup can vary quite a bit! Because of this, Tektites from different areas are given their own names to allow for easier identification. Moldavite is a name specifically given to olive-green or grey-green Tektites found along the Nordlinger Ries. This impact crater in Western Bavaria formed during the Miocene epoch and is incredibly unique, being the source of a strewnfield of Tektites that formed after the molten surface of the Earth mixed with meteorite material was flung across an almost 300-mile range. These Tektites, found mostly in the Czech Republic (with some rarer occurrences in Germany, Austria, and Poland), are Moldavites, showing off a highly bubbled and textured appearance due to the violent circumstances of their creation.
Moldavite is a greenish shade, olive green, or deep green with a hint of brown. Depending on the thickness of the specimen, it may have semi-transparency or be almost opaque. Moldavite often displays bubbles and an uneven surface texture due to the way that it was formed. This is because of Lechatelierite (pure melted Silica) vermiform inclusions, created by the extreme heat of the falling meteorite melting terrestrial minerals at the site of impact. Rare jewelry-quality specimens are sometimes cut, polished, and faceted to show off their transparency and color.
