Yellow Calcite is a natural gemstone variety of calcium carbonate and a polymorph of Aragonite, meaning that the two feature the same chemical makeup, but different crystal structures. Yellow Calcite can vary in shade and clarity, from a pale pastel yellow to nearly orange or amber depending on its rate of iron inclusion and the presence of other impurities.
We often get asked: Can Calcite get wet? As always with soft stones, we must advise against it. Yellow Calcite is a 2.5 - 3 on the Mohs hardness scale, meaning that the stone is quite soft. Long-term submersion can result in damage to your crystal, so we must caution against resting your Yellow calcite in liquids or wearing Yellow Calcite jewelry in the shower. Of course, a quick splash or wiping with a wet cloth won't cause your Yellow Calcite to disintegrate immediately, but when in doubt, it's best to avoid water exposure altogether.
