Black Kyanite Properties and Metaphysical Meaning
Each color of Kyanite has its own metaphysical strengths and gifts for those who work with them. Black Kyanite, known for its ability to filter away negative energies, influences, and emotions, is used as a gemstone for psychic protection, grounding, and keeping a clear head when making decisions. Although beneficial for the entire Chakral Column, Black Kyanite resonates most strongly with the Root Chakra to promote stability and a sense of wellbeing. Black Kyanite reminds us to focus on those things in life that bring us peace, making it useful when resolving conflicts, but also for breaking ties with people, habits, and ideologies that cause us suffering. For this reason, Black Kyanite is used for shielding against energy vampirism, evil eyes, and malicious magics, but it is also considered a powerful stone for personal transformation and positive change. This is because Black Kyanite helps us to clear blockages and work through our anger, stress, and despair so we can achieve greater balance of heart and mind.
Kyanite (sometimes called Cyanite, Cianite, or Disthene) is a metamorphic silicate mineral known for its dagger-like growths that form in brittle, splintery sprays. While the most well-known variety of Kyanite is Blue Kyanite, this natural gem can actually be found in a variety of shades such as Black Kyanite, Green Kyanite, White Kyanite, Rhätizite (light Gray Kyanite)-- even orange, yellow, or pink (though these colorations are harder to find). Kyanite is a polymorph of both Andalusite and Sillimanite, which means that they are made of the same chemical components, but in different formation structures. Even more interesting: Kyanite is anisotropic! This means that the hardness and strength of Kyanite varies depending on the direction in which pressure is applied (much like wood is more difficult to cut across the grain than along it). When the growth structure of Kyanite forms in extended parallel sections, the gemstone can exhibit chatoyancy (cats eye effect) after polishing, making it a natural choice for crystal jewelry, although it can be difficult to facet.
